The Mushroom Turning Award Trophy (complete with official embossed certificate) is presented each year to the turner who turns the "Best Turning" in the chosen yearly category and displays the item for judging (and the enjoyment of all) at the February meeting of the Adirondack Woodturners Association (AWA). The winner will have his/her name and the year engraved on the brass plaque of the award trophy and on the accompanying official embossed certificate.

The winning turner in one year has the privilege of choosing the category for the next year’s competition.

No restrictions of any kind, such as wood-type, size or finish may be imposed upon the category. Possible categories could be, but are certainly not limited to, bowls, a closed form, a candlestick or a honey dipper.

The winning turner agrees to return the Mushroom Turning Award Trophy to the AWA in time for the regular February meeting of the following year!

The first chosen yearly category for the Mushroom Turning Award was, as fate would have it, a "Mushroom".

The winner of the 2001 Challenge, Jack Norray, chose the theme for the 2002 Mushroom Turning Challenge: "Vases"

The winner of the 2002 Challenge, Wayne Fitzgerald, chose the theme for the 2003 Mushroom Turning Challenge: "Anything Spherical"

The winner of the 2003 Challenge, Paul Petrie, chose the theme for the 2004 Mushroom Turning Challenge: A Goblet Or Similar Stemmed Object Made Of At Least 2 Different Kinds Of Wood.

The winner of the 2004 Challenge, Rich Pagano, chose the theme for the 2005 Mushroom Turning Challenge: A Turned Box With A Removable Tray.

The winner of the 2005 Challenge, Don Orr, chose the theme for the 2006 Mushroom Turning Challenge: Turned Flowers.

The winner of the 2006 Challenge, Lynn Escher, will choose the theme for the 2007 Mushroom Turning Challenge.

Next challenge entries will be displayed and voted upon at the February 2007 meeting of the AWA.  The "Best Turning" will be determined by a secret ballot vote of the Adirondack Woodturners Association members present at the February 2007 meeting.
